Spelling to Communicate (S2C™) & DIR®/Floortime™

Singapore’s FIRST Spelling to Communicate (S2C™) PRACTITIONER

DIR®/Floortime™ (also known as Floortime) is an intervention that is used to promote an individual’s development through a respectful, playful, joyful, and engaging process. It uses the power of relationships and human connections to promote engagement, communication, positive behaviors, and thinking.

It is based on the DIR® model that was developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan and his colleagues. It is used around the world by teachers, occupational therapists, speech therapists, mental health professionals, parents, and many others that care for individuals with developmental challenges or other related needs.

It is an evidence-based approach to promoting human development that is used with children, young adults, and even adults…especially those on the autism spectrum.

Spelling to Communicate (S2C™) empowers non-speakers to overcome communication barriers posed by traditional oral communication by pointing to letters on a board as an alternative means of communication. This innovative method promotes synchrony between cognitive and motor systems.

Elizabeth Vosseller is the Executive Director of  International Association for Spelling as Communication (I-ASC) and founder of Spelling to Communicate (S2C)

S2C™ teaches individuals with motor challenges the purposeful motor skills necessary to point to letters as an alternative means of communication. As motor skills improve through consistent practice, students progress from pointing to letters on letterboards to typing on a keyboard.

What is the DIR®/Floortime™ Model used for?

Sensory development – for example, helping children make sense of what they see or hear.
Motor skills – for example, helping children get better at physical tasks like tying shoelaces
Emotional and cognitive development – for example, helping children recognize other people’s feelings
Communication – for example, helping children learn two-way communication.

This approach promotes development in several areas stated above.
What is Spelling to Communicate
Parents perspective on S2C

The fair and necessary assumption is that all individuals can and want to learn and communicate, regardless of their perceived limitations. By presuming competence, typing and spelling embraces non-speakers’ cognitive function and focus on purposeful motor movements.
